According to Chapters 7 and 8 of the Analects of Confucius
4. Though there might be a large quantity of meat, he would not allow what he took to exceed the due proportion for the rice. It was only in wine that he laid down no limit for himself, but he did not allow himself to be confused by it.
- A Paraphrased Quote from the Analects of Confucius
What can we learn from this wise Confucian teaching about this rule for eating healthy?
- Eat a balanced meal, not too much meat, but particularly not too much rice/carbohydrate.
- If you do eat more than the other (meat vs rice/carbohydrate), make it more meat less and less rice or carbohydrate (rice is fattening and though a good filler and complex carbohydrate, should be eaten in moderation or you can risk getting diabetes and obesity later in life, as you get older).
- Proportion your meal so you have less red meat and then rice to stretch out the meal and thereby save how much meat you eat and how much money you spend.
- Have a glass of wine with your meal for health's sake, in moderation.
- With wine, meat is undoubtedly better digested, less fat finds its way to harmful places in the body, and the blood is thinned to prevent unhealthy cholesterol buildup.
- If you eat more meat, the wine in moderation will compensate and balance this out a bit. Just don't be excessive...avoid the excesses as the ancient Chinese sages like Confucius have been known to say in their sayings and quotes of wisdom.
